Medellín is the capital of the department of Antioquia, the most populous city in the department and the second most in the country after Bogotá. As the capital of Antioquia, it houses the headquarters of the Departmental Government, the Departmental Assembly, the Departmental Court, the Metropolitan Area of Valle de Aburrá and the Sectional Directorate of Prosecutors.
Medellín is located in the widest part of the natural region known as Valle de Aburrá in the central Andes mountain range, it is crossed by the Medellín River and has a height of 1.475 meters above sea level. Medellín to the north borders the municipalities of Bello, Copacabana and San Jerónimo; to the south with Envigado, Itagüí, La Estrella and El Retiro.
